How to use it

  1. Open your SBV file

Choose or drop the SBV file, or several at once. It is read by this page and never uploaded.

  2. Check the SRT preview

SRT is already selected. Check the preview, or pick another format if you need one.

  3. Download the SRT file

Download the converted file, or all of them as a ZIP when you opened several.

About SBV files

SBV comes from SubViewer and is used by YouTube. Each caption starts with a line holding the start and end time separated by a comma, such as 0:00:01.000,0:00:04.000, followed by the text. There are no caption numbers and no formatting.

When you convert to SRT, the times are rewritten in the SRT style with hours and a comma before the milliseconds, and the captions are numbered from 1.

Getting captions out of YouTube

In YouTube Studio, open the video’s Subtitles page and use the menu next to a language to download it. Depending on the option you pick you may get SBV, SRT or VTT; all three work here. You can only download captions this way for videos on channels you manage.

Questions and answers

Is SBV the same as SRT?

No, but they hold the same information: start, end and text. Converting between them keeps every caption.

Can I convert SRT back to SBV?

Yes. Choose SBV (YouTube) as the output format on the converter.

What about SubViewer files?

SubViewer 2 files, with times such as 00:00:01.50, are recognized too and convert the same way.
