How to use it
Open your VTT file
Choose or drop the VTT file, or several at once. It is read by this page and never uploaded.
Check the ASS preview
ASS is already selected. Check the preview, or pick another format if you need one.
Download the ASS file
Download the converted file, or all of them as a ZIP when you opened several.
What changes from VTT to ASS
Each caption becomes a Dialogue line with the same start and end time, rounded to hundredths of a second, which is how ASS stores time. Line breaks become \N, and italic, bold and underline become ASS override tags.
The WEBVTT header, NOTE comments, STYLE blocks and cue settings such as position and alignment are left out. Voice tags are removed too, so a speaker name written as <v Name> does not appear in the ASS file.
Styling the result
The file uses one style called Default: Arial at size 72, white text with a black outline, at the bottom of a 1920 × 1080 frame. Open it in an ASS editor such as Aegisub to change fonts and colors or to position lines; the timings are already done.
Questions and answers
Will VTT positions carry over to ASS?
No. Cue settings are removed and every caption starts at the bottom center. Position lines again in an ASS editor if you need to.
Can I convert ASS back to VTT?
Yes. Use the ASS to VTT converter.
Does it work with VTT files from YouTube?
Yes. Any standard WebVTT file works. If automatic captions repeat lines, run the file through the subtitle cleaner first.
