SUB to VTT converter

MicroDVD .sub files time captions in video frames, which web players cannot read. Convert them to WebVTT (.vtt), which uses real times, to show the subtitles with an HTML5 video or on a learning platform.

No file at hand?

Your file is read by this page in your browser. It is not uploaded anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Open your SUB file

Choose or drop the SUB file, or several at once. It is read by this page and never uploaded.

  2. Check the VTT preview

VTT is already selected. Check the preview, or pick another format if you need one.

  3. Download the VTT file

Download the converted file, or all of them as a ZIP when you opened several.

Getting the timing right

Each frame number is divided by the frame rate to get its time. If the first line of the file declares a frame rate, such as {1}{1}25, it is used. Otherwise choose the frame rate of the video; 23.976 is selected by default, and 25 is common for PAL videos.

Read at the wrong frame rate, the captions drift further off as the video goes on. If that happens, convert again with another rate.

Formatting and other .sub files

Lines marked as italic in the MicroDVD file stay italic; codes for colors, fonts and positions are removed. SubViewer files, with times such as 00:00:01.50, also use .sub and are recognized too. Binary VobSub files from DVDs contain pictures and cannot be converted here.

Questions and answers

Do I need to know the frame rate?

Only when the file does not declare one. Check the video’s properties or your player’s media information.

Can I get an SRT file instead?

Yes. Choose SRT in the format list, or use the SUB to SRT converter.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted in your browser.
