What changes from SRT to VTT
The words, timings and line breaks stay the same. The file gets a WEBVTT header, the comma before the milliseconds becomes a dot, and caption numbers are left out because WebVTT does not need them. Italic, bold and underline carry over; SRT font colors are removed, because WebVTT styles text with CSS instead.
Characters with a special meaning in WebVTT, such as & and <, are written as & and < so that browsers show them correctly.
Using the VTT file on a website
Upload the .vtt file next to your video and add it with a track element inside the video element. Serve it from the same website as the page, or browsers may refuse to load it. Most video platforms and learning systems accept the file as it is.
Questions and answers
Can I just rename .srt to .vtt?
No. Browsers expect the WEBVTT header and dots in the times, so a renamed SRT file usually shows no captions. Converting takes a second and fixes both.
Will my SRT timing change?
No. Every caption keeps its exact start and end time to the millisecond.
Can I convert several SRT files to VTT at once?
