Subtitle to text converter

Get a clean transcript from a subtitle file. Numbers, timing lines and tags are removed, and the words are joined into readable paragraphs. Keep a timestamp on every line instead when you need to find a moment in the video.

Your file is read by this page in your browser. It is not uploaded anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Open your subtitle file

Choose or drop one or more subtitle files, or paste the text of one.

  2. Choose the layout

Join captions into paragraphs for reading, or add timestamps to keep one line per caption.

  3. Copy or download the text

Copy the transcript in one click or download it as a TXT file.

Paragraphs or timestamps

Join into paragraphs puts captions together into flowing text and starts a new paragraph after a pause of two seconds or more, or after a long run of sentences. This is the easiest layout for reading, quoting or pasting into a document.

Add timestamps writes one caption per line with its start time, such as [01:24] in front. Use it for notes, show notes or when you want to jump back to a moment in the video.

What is removed

Caption numbers, timing lines, WebVTT headers and notes, and ASS style information are left out. Italic, bold and other tags are removed, and a caption that repeats the one before it, as automatic captions often do, appears only once.

Sound descriptions such as [applause] are kept, because they can matter in a transcript. Run the file through the subtitle cleaner first if you want them gone.

Accuracy

The transcript contains exactly the words in the subtitle file. Automatic captions can get names, numbers and quiet speech wrong, so check important quotes against the recording before you rely on them.

Questions and answers

How do I convert SRT to TXT?

Open the SRT file on this page and download the result. Numbers and timestamps are removed, and the lines are joined into paragraphs.

Can I keep the timestamps?

Yes. Tick Add timestamps to keep the start time of every caption at the beginning of its line.

Does it work with YouTube subtitles?

Yes, if you have the subtitle file. YouTube caption files in SBV, SRT or VTT format all work.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The page reads the file in your browser and creates the text there. Nothing is sent to a server.
