SUB to SRT converter

MicroDVD .sub files count video frames instead of seconds, so they only line up with a video at one frame rate. Convert them to SRT, which uses real times and works with any player.

How to use it

  1. Open your SUB file

Choose or drop the SUB file, or several at once. It is read by this page and never uploaded.

  2. Check the SRT preview

SRT is already selected. Check the preview, or pick another format if you need one.

  3. Download the SRT file

Download the converted file, or all of them as a ZIP when you opened several.

Choosing the right frame rate

Many MicroDVD files declare their frame rate in the first line, such as {1}{1}23.976, and the converter uses it. If the file has none, choose the frame rate of the video the subtitles were made for. 23.976 is the most common for films and is selected by default; if the captions drift, try 25.

Each frame number is divided by the frame rate to get its time, so a file read at the wrong rate comes out slightly too fast or too slow.

Two kinds of .sub file

The .sub extension is used by more than one format. Text files whose lines start with frame numbers in curly braces are MicroDVD; files with times such as 00:00:01.50 are SubViewer. Both are recognized. Binary VobSub files from DVDs, a .sub with a matching .idx file, contain pictures rather than text and cannot be converted here.

Questions and answers

How do I know which frame rate to pick?

Check the video file’s properties or your player’s media information. If you are unsure, convert with 23.976, test a scene near the end, and try 25 if the captions drift.

Can I convert SRT to MicroDVD?

Yes. Choose SUB (MicroDVD) in the converter; the frame rate you pick is written into the file.

Are italics kept?

Lines marked as italic in the MicroDVD file stay italic. Codes for colors, fonts and positions are removed.
